The Hybrids Continue
Nike’s series of hybrids styles continues and with this Air Max 90/1 it’s a big one. For the first time the AM 1 and AM 90 have been merged, and the result has been given the renowned OG colourway of the originator. This combining of two classics follows Sean Wotherspoon’s hugely popular mixing of the Air Max 1 and 97 earlier this year. Cynics may have guessed that playing Dr Frankenstein with such seemingly untouchable styles would not end well, but this is consistently being proved to not be the case.
The Vapormax midsole, previewed with it’s own flyknit upper last year, has been the subject of numerous premium hybridisations. It too has joined forces with the Air max 97 upper in various colourways. The Vapormax Plus, that mixes it with the aggressive upper of the Air max Plus, has also been lapped up. Just last week we saw this futuristic full transparent midsole mixed with the hand woven upper of the Nike Inneva. It seems that, just as with people, mixing is good when it comes to Air Max styles. And so, it was perhaps inevitable that the two silhouettes that launched the franchise into the stratosphere, the Air Max 1 and the Air Max 90, would eventually be combined. As you can see, the experiment was a success once again, producing the Air Max 90/1.
Mixing of Heritage
At first sight the Air Max 90/1 would seem that the main influence on this new design is the Air Max 1, as it has borrowed its iconic OG White, Grey and University Red. It has even wiped out the hit of colour on the Air Max 90 midsole. However the materials used for the all leather uppers, instead of the classic mesh and nubuck suede, is a much more 90-esque feature. So, perhaps the merging is about equal.
