This new ‘Whooper Swan’ version if the Karhu Aria is the latest special release from the Finnish sports brand. It takes inspiration from Karhu’s heritage that stretches back to the 19th century. This is combined, as is often the case, with aspects of the natural world which plays a big role in the life of all Finns. In 1985 Karhu released a simple, slimline running silhouette known simply as the ‘Trainer’. This came in an introductory pack of three bright colourways. The one that most caught the attention the public had a soft yellow nylon upper with light grey suede overlays and dark grey branding. This became known as the ‘Whooper Swan’, as the colours were reminiscent of the beak of this esteemed bird. The Finn’s love the Whooper Swan so much that it is featured on the Finnish 1 Euro coin.
This bright and patriotic colourway has recently caught people’s attention once again. Those people work for Karhu’s current design team. The saw that the combination of yellow and greys has stood the test of time. So, they have transplanted it onto the Karhu Aria, a silhouette that perhaps sits better with current tastes. The style at the moment is for a chunky , solid looking silhouette and the Aria fits this bill. As you can see from these preview shots of the silhouette the colour combination definitely translates well onto the shoe. Premium nylon mesh uppers and a neoprene collar contrast against against pigskin suede overlays. This sits on a pure white cushioned midsole to finish the sporty look.
