ASICS have delved into their illustrious archive once again and retrieved the GEL-1090. This first OG colourway release is to be followed by a number of other striking colourways across the season. The 1090 was first released in 2004 as an affordable option for fans of the Kayano and quickly became a favourite for runners across the globe. Its sleek look was typical of running silhouettes of the period and featured new innovations in the brand’s GEL cushioning technology based on 70 year’s of performance focussed research.
When designing the 1090, the ASICS team wanted to create an eye-catching runner. To do this they turned to an unusual source: the world of motorsports. According to ASICS, their aim was to draw on the “high energy nature and extreme speeds of professional racing vehicles” having seen a parallel between these competing machines and the “fearless runners that run for the thrill of finishing first and the continuous challenge of beating their personal best.”
As you can see, the streamlined uppers, the graphic hits and the metallic details are reminiscent of the high performance chassis of Formula 1 cars and Super-bikes. To match this appearance of high-speed performance, the boffins in the ASICS lab then needed to deliver on the practical side. As they themselves put it:
“Drawing on decades of Japanese expertise and innovation, the GEL-1090 features groundbreaking GEL technology under the heel and forefoot, and a durable rubber outsole with flex grooves for extra stability and traction” Along with this, you also have an ultra-lightweight build on the upper and sturdy moulded midfoot unit for improved support.
