Throughout the past few months, we have seen Asics gearing up their releases of the Gel Lyte III to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this iconic silhouette. Soon to join the drop list is their most recent collaboration with Japanese contemporary fashion retailer, Mita.
In the past, Asics and Mita have teamed up on a variety of silhouettes from the Gel Kayano Trainer, to the GT-II and of course, the Gel Lyte III. Due to the two brands shared love of fashion ideologies and the fact that they hail from the same country, it has become a powerful pairing when it comes to creating design masterpieces.
Their most recent work sees the original silhouette’s designer, Shigeyuki Mitsui return to lend a hand in designing this style alongside Mita’s, Shigeyuki Kunii. In a video posted to Asics Youtube channel, these two designers discuss original design features and key elements of this new style that elevate the design beyond its predecessor.
The shoe has a very clear nod to the flag of Japan, home to both parts of this collaboration through the use of colour, with the main body of the shoe in white and the toe in a deep red. A waterproof zipper is cleverly used up the centre of the iconic split tongue design, to allow the wearing to more easily and comfortably wear this shoe without necessarily doing up the laces. Along with these features the words ‘Far East’ are printed along the outsole and the insole is designed with a chain link illustration drawn by Shigeyuki Mitsui himself. Completing the look, the medial Asics Tiger stripes are dressed in both red and blue to reference the previous release from these two brands.
