Carhartt Work In Progress is the fashion orientated side of the world famous workwear brand.
The sub-brand was launched in 1994, as a European distribution network, in response to the adoption of Carhartt’s durable, well constructed and comfortable shirts, trousers and other apparel into street fashion. In 1997 they launched the first purely fashioned orientated line, taking Carhartt’s traditional work wear cuts and adapting them to the demands of an active life in an urban environment.
European Takeover This launch of the Work In Progress side of the Carhartt brand in 1994, gave licence for the distribution of select products from the brand to be sold in Europe for the first time. The success of this venture was immediate with European skaters, graffiti writers and other active participants in urban youth culture immediately recognising the potential of Carhartt’s simple designs and rugged construction. The 1997 line that was the first by the brand to cater purely for the urban fashion market was an obvious next step. It featured re-interpretations and new fits of the original work wear especially designed for this new following that remained true to the brand’s dedication to quality, durability and comfort.
American Legacy In 1889, Hamilton Carhartt founded the Carhartt company in that centre of American heavy industry, Detroit, Michigan; The Motor City. Although when Mr Carhartt established the company the majority of this industrial growth was in the future, so his choice of location was intuitive. His first line of products was a range of work overalls made from thick denim and durable duck canvas. Since then the brand has been dedicated to producing ‘Best In Class’ clothing for America’s population of active workers. They have for 120 years concentrated on durability, quality and comfort, always using the reliable materials of denim and thick cotton canvas to make pants, jackets and overalls. Today Carhartt is the ‘go-to’ brand for American tradespeople and has earned itself a legendary reputation as the garment of choice for those build, plumb and fix the country.
