Brand History

Founded in 2003, REBEL8 is a San Francisco streetwear company with deep roots in skateboard, graffiti, and tattoo cultures.

Joshy D. and Mike Giant met in the late 1990’s in San Francisco’s then bustling graffiti scene. Josh ran the popular graffiti website, HiFiArt, and Mike was one of the city’s most notorious writers.

Years later, and having had some experience with a previous clothing venture, Josh approached Mike about creating a handful of t-shirt graphics. Mike agreed, and with $500 a small batch of shirts was made.

Josh sold those shirts out of a messenger bag around the city, and REBEL8 was born. Today, Joshy D. runs the business and Mike Giant sees to the art as REBEL8 finds itself growing in many creative directions at once.

Now an internationally recognizable brand, REBEL8 is still committed to the communities from which it comes, and strives to reinforce its unique lifestyle with every product.

Rebel8 Originals
Every graphic by Mike Giant is hand-illustrated. Unlike most clothing graphics, which are created by digitizing the original artwork into vector format, Mike’s graphics are exact reproductions of his original art. No part of the original inked line is compromised in this process, lending an edge of authenticity seldom seen in today’s mass-produced market.

Recent News
The conception of most streetwear brands can usually be traced back to one creative mind, as with Shawn Stussy with Stussy, Bobby Hundreds with The Hundreds, Keith Hufnagel with HUF, and the list goes on. Usually though, as the brand grows, other creatives are recruited to take some of the workload. Rebel8 seems to be the exception to the rule.

Although I'm sure the creative department of the company is more than just Mike Giant sitting in his studio, this doesn't seem too far from the truth.  The entire aesthetic of the brand, with it's recurring themes of tattoos, graff and beautifully illustrated young women, comes straight from the pen of Mr Giant.

Every design you see on a Rebel8 is an exact copy of the original illustration drawn by Mike Giant. There has been no digital vectoring of the image as with most prints even though each line is so sharp that this is difficult to believe. The 'Ball and Chain' tee is a perfect example of this. The intricacy and detailing that has gone into the design is so mind blowing that it is difficult to believe that is hand made.

All the typefaces used by Rebel8, as seen on the 'Clean Cholo' tee are also taken straight from Giants drawing board, reflecting his decades spent perfecting his graffiti style. It's scary how so much creativity can come from one man. He certainly deserves all the respect and admiration he recieves.
