Brand History
Rumour has it that Mishka was started after two kids got their hands on an evil black metal album and played it backwards as a homage to Satan. Others say it was started by two guys called Greg and Mikhail who were sick of doing design work for other people and wanted to follow there own creative direction. There influences are noticably different to other streetwear brands, focusing more on punk rock and horror comics than bling, money and guns.

In their own words: "We just gravitate towards the obscure and oddball. We understand that only a handful of people will get our references, but we try to balance that by presenting them in a strong visual manner that anyone can enjoy without fully understanding it.....We continue to love what we design. We make things that we want to wear. We are weird oddball kids and I think the brands reflects that."

Mishka offers a full collection ranging from denim and tees to outerwear and accessories, all in their unique fashion.

Artist Collaborations
While most companies often lose consistency when they do artist collaborations, Mishka works closely with emerging artists to make sure graphics are both fresh, and purely Mishka. They have worked with several talented comic artists in the past including: Andy Rementer, Jon Vermilyea and Dennis Chow. According to Mishka there are several collaborations in the pipe line including a project with talented NY artist and designer JK5.

The Future of the Brand
Mishka is still a relatively small company with a handful of people doing several jobs each. According to a statement made in an interview for French street culture magazine Clark they are recruiting new sales reps all the time and making new deals with regional distributors.

According to Mikhail: "Regardless of how big things grow, at the end of the day our main concern is to just be 'us' and stay true to a style we've cultivated and people have grown to love....In the end, regardlessof what stores we're in or not in, Mishka won't comprimise it's identity and style."

Recent Mishka News
Mishka's Death Adder seems to represent a lot for the brand. Not only is it one of their core graphics that has helped Mishka become an internationally recognized and respected brand, it has of late become the mascot for a non existant American football team. The branded helmet to be worn by these imaginary athletes is the main graphic on the 'ETD' (Engineered To Destroy) tees and crews that came with drop 1 of Fall '11.

The 'Death Adders Football' tee with a simpler and more compact design on the front, is further promotion for this team with no home...or players. As Mishka say on their site:  "If you hate real football then maybe get into our fake football team. It's the most monstrous one you could ever imagine."  Indeed, going with the usual aesthetic tastes of these lot you can imagine that the team photo would possibly give you bad dreams and definitely make you very glad you never persued a career in the NFL.

The meanest snakey bear around also appears in new colourways in his 'Oversized' version on several new tees and heavyweight crews and on what Mishka have described as 'the bossest jackets we've ever made.' This varsity jacket is pure quality and full of brilliant embroidered/towel fabric details. Check out the detail page here.
